The Class 117 DMU's were introduced in 1959. The units are 64 feet long, and 9 feet 3 inches wide. They are fitted with two British United Traction / Leyland 680 6-cylinder horizontal type diesel engines each producing 150bhp. They use a standard mechanical transmission and are Blue Square coded for coupling and multiple working. The Class 117's were designed for high-density local services. They were a Derby design for use on the Western Region of BR, intended for use around the Paddington and Reading areas on inner suburban services. The BTC placed an order on the 16th of October 1959 for 168 vehicles. Of these, 57 were DMBS's, 57 were DMS's and 54 were TC's. The Pressed Steel Co. of Linwood, near Paisley, were contracted to build 123 vehicles, and the remaining 45 were to be built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. which became Class 118's. Delivery of the Class 117's began in November 1959, with the final 3-car set delivered on the 5th of November 1960. |
