The Signal and Telegraph department is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all signalling related apparatus on the railway. This includes fixed signals, omnibus telephones, lever frames, point rodding and associated mechanisms, and various forms of detection systems. The railway makes extensive use of traditional mechanical signalling practices and principles. Mechanical operation is used extensively, with only a few future installations planned to be electrically operated. The largest mechanical installation in use on the Strathspey Railway is at Boat of Garten South, where an extensive set of pointwork and associated signals are controlled. There is also use of electrical interlocking between Boat of Garten South and Boat of Garten North, which allows the signalman on duty at the South 'box to effectively control the arrival of trains into the station. There are many future developments on the drawing board, including several additional signals at Boat of Garten North, additional signals at Aviemore Speyside, and the introduction of Electric Key Token instruments for the Aviemore to Boat of Garten single line section. The S&T team is always keen to hear from anyone interested in getting involved - if you would like more information, please contact us. |
