As well as the day-to-day maintenance of the track, signals, locomotives and coaching stock on the railway, there are long term projects which may take many years to complete.  As with all other work on the railway, these are completed mostly by the volunteers of the Strathspey Railway Association, as well as the small team of paid staff of the Strathspey Railway Company.  Occasionally these projects also require us to employ outside contractors where parts of the job require specialist equipment or training.

The largest project currently being undertaken is the extension of the Strathspey Railway from its current Northern terminus at Broomhill to Grantown on Spey, around three and a half miles further North.
