The planned extension to Grantown on Spey is a major project for the Strathspey Railway, which will draw on the skills and experience of the volunteers of the Strathspey Railway Association, the employees of the Strathspey Railway Company, and possibly on outside contractors where the work requires skills or equipment which are not available inhouse.

The extension is a long term project, with a projected opening of 2012 at the earliest.  There are a number of hurdles which must be overcome, including a bridge over the river Dulnain, and the completion of a tunnel beneath the A95 when the road is realigned.

Most of the work on this project is currently 'behind the scenes', however visible work has begun to the North of Broomhill Loop.  In the Spring and Summer of 2007 the trackbed was cleared and graded between Broomhill and the river Dulnain.  With assistance from the SRA and making good use of members donations, all fencing has been repaired or renewed, gates have been fitted, and culverts have been laid up as far as the site of the bridge.
